Fredric was back on his feet, but he was barely able to stand, his body beat up, head throbbing with pain. The elf he now knew as Alvacor approached.

“Sir Fredric, will you allow me to see to your injuries?”

“How is it that you are here and why?” the knight asked, ignoring his question.

“I did not want him to kill you,” the elf said. “Please, have a seat, and I will explain as I tend you. I can remove that throbbing. Would you not wish to be able to think clearer?”

Fredric was glad to lower himself onto a rock. He wasn’t sure he should accept the elf’s help, but the elf had just saved his life; that was no small debt to owe.

The knight took off his helmet. Alvacor placed his hand on the back of Fredric’s neck; the pain started seeping away.

“When you said you were going to fight draccans in the Gallean forest,” the elf began, “I knew something wasn’t right since I had eradicated those beasts in the whole region of Gallea. I did not think their fear of the area would let them return, but there was a small chance, so I’d allowed for that. Then you mentioned the bodies were charred. Draccans do not use fire. That was my second clue. I couldn’t warn you, but I gave it some thinking after you left. For reasons too long and complicated to list, I thought of Merridiac. I had not seen him for years and did not know of his whereabouts, but it was very possible for him to show up here. A bit of investigation confirmed my guess. I didn’t want you to die, so I left the Dormigan and came here.”

He removed his hand. Except for a very mild soreness, the pain was gone.

“Left the Dormigan,” Fredric repeated. “It is true, then. You could escape any time you wanted. Where’s my brother?” he asked, remembering Malgrid.

“Safe and sound, hiding behind those rocks. Governor Jorensen!” the elf called out. “Come and join us, I won’t set you on fire.”

Malgrid stepped onto the recent battlefield, looking as if he didn’t put much trust in the elf’s promise. He took several hesitant steps toward them and stopped.

“I am very impressed with your courage,” Alvacor told him. “You rushed here knowing that you could encounter another ‘dark elf,’ as you call us. Not something I would expect of you, I must admit.”

“If I knew I would encounter two, you being one of them, I would have kept that stupid bout of bravery in check,” Malgrid replied.

The elf gave a half-smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“You lied to me,” Fredric said.

Alvacor seemed to ponder those words before he replied. “I had not given a direct answer to your question because I didn’t want you to alert the authorities to the fact that I was using the Dormigan as an inn—which you would have done by going to the king and refusing your knighthood.”

He wanted to say something else, but the other elf came closer, heard the statement and interrupted.
